John Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN)

for 6 am.

While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA)

was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG).

He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA),

designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE),

and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).

After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA),

he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO)to see how much he could spend today.

After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN)

to the radio (MADE IN INDIA), he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY), filled it with GAS (FROM SAUDI ARABIA), and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, checking his computer (MADE IN MALAYSIA), John decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL), poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE), and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA).

...and then he wondered why he couldn't find a good paying job in AMERICA.

AND NOW HE'S HOPING HE CAN GET HELP FROM A PRESIDENT (MADE IN KENYA).

Four months

So what is it like to be a 95% raw vegan for four months?

1. 2 sizes smaller
2. haven't been sick at all.....no colds,no headache,no sore throats, no respiratory problems, NO STOMACH gas pains or other ailments....
3. more energy
4. hardly any muscle aches...i can actually get out of bed and not hurt
5. softer skin
6. enhanced taste buds....(if i taste anything processed or when we eat out,i cannot stand the taste...it is toooooo salty or sweet for me)
7. I can eat as much nuts, seeds, fruit and veggies that i want. No more limitations on the "3 fruits a day" diet or "use imitation chemical sweeteners instead of honey diet". How can anyone limit God's pharmacy of the wonderful fresh nutritious summer fruits!

So what am i missing?
1. nothing, I feel amazing!!!!!!!

Wasp Spray

I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk
area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on
Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She
asked the local police department about using pepper spray and
they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray
instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty
feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper
spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower
you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they
get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her
desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people
like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at
home for home protection. You could also keep it in your car and
it's perfectly legal. Thought this was interesting and might be
of use.

Kidney Beans

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function.

And yes,
they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Beans and Rice

Soak desired amount of beans in water overnight.
Remove any bad beans that are floating in the water.
The next morning, pour off the water and replace with fresh water.
Put in enough water to cover the beans.
Add onion, garlic, bay leaf, salt and pepper.
As the beans cook, they will absorb the water, so you will need to add more.
Cook until the beans are tender.
Serve the beans in the liquid for soup,or strain and serve over rice.

1 cup grapes (frozen or fresh)

Tomato/Basil Soup

Puree 3 large tomatoes in the food processer or blender
Add 1 scallion, about 1/2 cup tomato juice*, handful of basil, salt and pepper.
Serve cold, for best nutritional value!!!!
* the tomato juice makes this recipe not raw, but it's still pretty close to being raw.

If you want to make it into gazpacho,
add about 1/2 green pepper, (red and yellow will work, too), and a cucumber.
To serve: put some cut up veggies into the bowl and add the liquid.
Serve cold, as well.

Carrot Raisen Salad

Shred 1pound of carrot
Mix with one large can of crushed pineapple in it's own juice
(or one fresh pineapple, chopped in processor)
Add about 1 cup raisens
Season with orange juice and honey for desired sweetness.
The longer it sits and marinates, the better.

A new discovery

I found a new store yesterday.
The Phoenicia Specialty Foods.
It's basically a huge middle eastern specialty store.
I would say it's like the Cosco or Sam's of the middle east.
Though there was not alot I could buy, it was a great find.

Old friends, not friends who are old

Yesterday was a good day. Abby (in the red shirt) and I have been friends since middle school. We've stayed in touch all these years. Through Facebook, we found Karen, the girl in the middle. She was also friends with us, but it has been at least 35 years since we've had any contact. It was so much fun catching up. Coincidentally, she is not the only friend that I have connected with since high school. This week, there were 4 friends....2 were planned and 2 happened to be at the same place I was at. How strange was that? I gotta start taking my camera with me everywhere.
I love Facebook.

Amelia Island was definitely our favorite spot. The quiet, slow paced, relaxed beach town has so much charm and quirkiness. It is just 20 minutes from Jacksonville, easy to get to, and a city not to miss. We can't wait to go back and explore more...

Southern Charm is definately seen in Savannah.
Lots of oak trees, with draping moss.
We stayed in the Historic District and loved
seeing all the old buildings and their southern style.
The Savannah School of Art and Design is local, with
about 120 buildings scattered throughout the city.
As a result, lots of artsy kids, lots of art.
Too bad the rain limited me from taking too many pictures.

Congregation Mickve Israel is the third oldest synaogue in America.
It is also the only Gothic synagogue in America.
It houses the oldest Torah in American.

The Friendship Circle

This organization has touched our hearts. The name of the organization is called the Friendship Circle. They help children and adults with conditions like Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Down syndrome along with various other challenges and disabilities.

This program is now being offered to well over 50 children with conditions like autism, Down's Syndrome, and other such challenges. Through the gifts and joys of friendship, the young volunteers are able to reach the children in ways that most forms of therapy cannot. Furthermore, the program has had a profound effect on the teenagers themselves instilling within them the values of giving and gratitude.

The Adult Division serves adults with special needs in the Richmond and Brenham State Schools and The Center. The Golden Circle serves seniors living in assisted living facilities. Often forgotten by mainstream society, the residents at these facilities light up with joy during the Jewish holiday parties.

The Friendship Circle will be having a Walk on Sunday, May 10th, at 2 pm from the Jewish Family Services to the Merfish Teen Center to promote awareness and raise funds for this very special cause. Please help the Friendship Circle by sponsoring the Walk.

Creative Recycling

On January 10th, my class started the worm bin for recycling leftover fruits, veggies, egg shells, etc. from their lunches. As of now, it's nice and stinky, creating enriched nitrogen from the worm castings. (nature's poop)

Yep, it's an old air conditioner.

Now look into the top of it, what do you see...Isn't this the most creative compost bin you've ever seen! I give Eddie the credit for coming up with this idea. He was able to get this old unit from a business neighbor. The air conditioning company has no use for these old units, except to sell as scrap. I love that I can recycle scrap into something positive!

A day at the park

We took Sophie and Matthew to Japan yesterday.
Or should I say, "to the Japanese Gardens at Herman Park."
All of Herman Park has been redone, I was so impressed with it.
As you can see, Matthew wasn't so impressed, in fact,
he slept the entire time.
Sophie had to do everything...including the train, twice!
The weather was perfect and we had a great day.
The beauty of grandparenting!

On Wed, we took Josh and Alex to San Antonio for the night.
Our purpose was to get our eyes checked and new glasses from a close friend who lives there.
My secret mission: to go see Kevin and Annmarie Gianni from the Renegade Health Show.

It was so much fun for me to meet them, they are so down to earth, so nice.
This was the first time I've met someone through blogging.
I was nervous and excited, like a kid going backstage at a concert.

Houston Rodeo

Last night we went to the Houston Rodeo.
Alex had never been to a rodeo before, so we showed her how we do it in Texas.

Personally, even though I did enjoy the Rodeo,
I thought most of the events were very cruel to the animals.
Ever wonder how they get those bulls and horses to buck?

The cutest event was the mutton riding....little children riding on the back of a sheep-holding on as long as they can before falling off. These kids were 4 years old and up.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers for Eddie.

I can report that all is well, now that he is able to speak again.

At first, his voice was very weak, but every hour it's getting stronger and stronger.

He's on the road to recovery, just still in a bit of pain and still tires out easily.

He'll be back to his usual self soon....

100th day of school

Today was the 100th day of school.
We celebrated by having a party, of course.
Each student brought in 100 of an item. We had marshmallows, soup nuts, potatoe chips, tortilla chips, jelly bellies, chocolate chips, and all kinds of cookies.
One student also brought in 100 hair items. We laid them all out and counted by 10's, measured, and had fun with the whole project.

Now, only 69 days of school!

Well, here's the answers. Just read the book, it took me about an hour to read.

Tofu Tacos

Ok, so it's not really a taco...it's more like a tofu pita. Still yummy, just the same.

Saute red, yellow, and green peppers, along with

red onions, swiss chard, and chili peppers.

Add some cayenne, garlic powder, and cumin.
When carmelized, spoon into pita with some hot sauce.

Add the tofu.....enjoy.

Oven baked tofu.

The secret to cooking with tofu is to slice and press the water out first.

I buy extra firm tofu, organic.

Slice and lay on paper towels.

Top with paper towel and then place a heavy object on top to help squeeze out the water.

Once drained (they can sit for hours or 30 minutes), dip in egg and then bread crumbs.

Spray cookie sheet with pam and then spray the top of the slices.

Bake until brown and crunchy.

Cocoa Mulch

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Indian Corn Soup and Spinach/Swiss Chard Paranthas

The spinach/swiss chard paranthas were alot more work then I would have like.

Even though they were good, i don't think i'll make them again.

I love the colors.

Indian Corn Soup
(www.manjulaskitchen.com/2008/06/20/corn-vegetable-soup/) (i changed the recipe a bit)
Ingredients:
1 can of creamed corn (2 would be better, but I only had one)
1 medium tomato
About 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
8 to 10 string beans
1 small carrot
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon oil
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon lemon juice (adjust to taste)

Method
Chop cabbage, carrot, and string beans into very small pieces.
Chop tomato in small pieces. Set aside.
Puree the corn in a blender.
Mix the cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water and set aside.
Heat the oil in a saucepan. Test the heat by adding one cumin seed to the oil; if seed cracks right away oil is ready.
Now add the cumin seeds. After the cumin seeds crack, add the carrot, cabbage, beans and 1/4 cup of water. Cook the vegetables on medium heat until they are tender.
Next, add the pureed corn, cornstarch mixture, and three cups of water to the vegetables. Bring the soup to a boil and lower the heat to medium low.

Add the tomatoes.

Let the soup cook for another five minutes.

Add the lemon juice, top with cilantro, and serve.

Crispy Cajun Chickpea Cakes

INGREDIENTS
Makes 12
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1/4 cup diced onion
- 1/4 cup diced green pepper
- 1 celery stalk, diced
- 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tsp paprika
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp hot sauce
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- salt and pepper to taste
- oil for frying
METHOD
1. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Saute onion, green pepper, and celery for 5-7 mins, until softened. Remove from heat.
2. Place chickpeas in a food processor along with the onion mixture. Pulse until chickpeas are no longer whole, but dont process them too much. Place chickpeas in a bowl and add spices, hot sauce, and parsley. Mix well. Add flour and cornstarch and mix well. Place in the fridge for 30 mins.
3. Heat oil in a frying pan over med/med-hi heat (around 350 degrees). Shape chickpea mixture into 12 patties and fry in batches, about 2-3 mins per side, or until crispy and browned. Flip a few times if they are browning too quickly. If you have trouble forming the patties, add some more cornstarch to hold it all together.

Vegetarian Zucchini Rice

1 cup rice
2 cups water
1 cup shredded zucchini (with skin)
1 tablespoon of oil
1 teaspoon of butter
1/2 teaspoon cumin seed (jeera)
1/2 teaspoon black mustard seed (rai)
4 red peppers whole
2 Bay leaves (tajpat)
1/2 teaspoon of salt
Small piece of cinnamon stick about 1/2 inch (dal chini)
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
Method:
Heat the oil and butter in a heavy saucepan over medium high heat. Test the heat by adding one cumin seed to oil; if the cumin cracks right away oil is ready.
Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds to the oil. After seeds crack add red pepper and bay leaves. Add rice and stir-fry for about 2 minutes.
Add water, zucchini, salt and lemon juice and a small piece of cinn. Stick.. Stir and bring to boil.
After rice comes to a boil turn the heat down to low and cover the pan. Cook rice for about fifteen minutes or until the rice is tender and the water has evaporated.

Yesterday, we went to Galveston for the afternoon and evening. Our friends just moved back into their house after Hurricane Ike did considerable damage. They still have lots of work to do. Here's some pictures from our visit. The 2 dogs are their puppies, Bluebell and Bella. Lady, the momma, looks like the brown and white pup. Here's a picture of when they were born.

One of the good things about blogging is that you can broaden your interest on any given subject and find others who are just as passionate about certain subjects. Though I am not a total vegan at this point, I am certainly trying to get to that point. The hardest thing to give up is the eggs, afterall, most things I cook include eggs. Have you ever tried to bread tofu w/o the egg batter ...impossible. Anyone have any suggestions?

My First Heena

My son, Eric, always has a heena design on the palm of his hand.

I love it, especially since it's temporary.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to get my first heena.

The heena is put on similar to writing on a cake.

It takes about 30 minutes to dry.

Once it starts to crack, then it can be washed off.

Here's the final product.

It should last at least a week or more....I don't know since this is my first heena.

I'm hooked!

My newest grandchild, Matthew Alan, was born a month

early after Dana spent one week in the hospital with premature labor.

Matthew is named after my brother, Alan,

who passed away 2 years ago.

Sophie celebrated her 2nd birthday today.

Wow, time goes fast.

She loves having a baby brother.

I love being a grandma.

Sophie calls me "Mee Ma", I don't know where she got it from, but I love that it's my special name from her.

So far, with meds, she's still holding on.

She was also given steroids so that the baby's lungs will develop faster.

Dana is presently 34 1/2 weeks pregnant.

Guess who's coming home on Saturday!

This visit will last 2 1/2 weeks, and then they will once again return to Costa Rica to continue studying at the SAT Yoga Institute.

They have been traveling towards an inward journey ever since they set foot in India. Costa Rica is also home to a number of spiritual communities (not referring to religious) that foster meditation, yoga, spiritual growth, self realization and a life that is not focused on material possessions. They have enjoyed exploring these avenues and would like to see where it takes them.

Ladybug week at school

This past week at school, we had Ladybug Week.

We read all kinds of books about ladybugs, including the favorite:

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle.

We learned about the life cycle.

We made paper ladybugs.

We learned about the letter "L"

and lots more activites.

At the end of the week, we all dressed up as ladybugs. What a great week we had!

What is the approach of Judaism to the observance of Thanksgiving holiday. Is it observed or recognized: if yes why, if no why?

Thanksgiving can be divided into three parts:
The idea. The day. The celebration.
The Idea:
Giving thanks is a very Jewish idea, as a matter of fact, as Jews we give thanks to G-d every day as soon as we wake up, right before we go to bed, and at least a hundred times in between.
The Idea of thanks-giving is thus supported and celebrated by Judaism.
The Day:
Thanksgiving Day as a national American Holiday, is just that: a National American Holiday. As Jews we ought to commend America as a nation for deciding out of the goodness of its own heart to dedicate one day to give (or highlight) thanks to G-d. At the same time, as Jews there is no reason to limit our own thanks to one day, or to have an American chosen day represent the Jewish idea of thanks.

The Day of thanksgiving should be recognized and categorized as a noble American Holiday; Judaism doesn’t think it needs to be officially endorsed or adopted by Jewish institutions.
The Celebration:
There are two ways to give thanks to someone.

A) Give him something you like, or you think he likes.

B) Give him something he asked for.

The American Thanksgiving gives thanks to G-d through the former. The Jewish idea of giving thanks to G-d is the latter. So if you feel the need to apply the adage “when in Rome do like the Romans” and thus celebrate Thanksgiving precisely the way our fellow citizens do, make sure it is a Kosher meal, and remember to recite the proper blessings. Additionally, don’t let the festivities of Thursday night’s dinner take away from your enthusiasm and celebration of the Friday night and Shabbat meals.

The Celebration of Thanksgiving is a marvelous human gesture. Judaism hopes you will also give thanks befitting of a Divine request.

There is an obligation for a Jew to make at least 100 blessings a day.

Hurricane Ike blew down this pecan tree.

Part of the tree fell into the water and we couldn't get it out. Birds and ducks have taken up residence around the fallen tree. This bird has been out on the branches for days, sometimes it brings friends with it.

Isn't this weather wonderful. Since it is so nice and cool in the mornings, I leave the front door open to our apartment/classroom (we are in an apt while the building is being remodeled). Suddenly, during storytime, a bird flew into our room, fluttered about, and quickly flew out. It happened so fast, but the kids all saw it. They were so surprised and excited about it. It was very funny to see.

I sure hope we get some sprouts. (I know the space is way too narrow, but it is all a part of the learning experience)The last time we tried planting , we planted beans in egg shells and all they did was get moldy! My green thumb might be turning blue.

It's harder than it looks

I make alot of smoothies. So many of my recipes call for coconut water or meat. So i decided to try it out. I researched how to open it on you tube. It looks so easy. Four hits with a cleaver and then pop the top off. Right?....Well, if I had the cleaver, maybe it would have been.

After several attempts with a cook's knife, philip finally got it open. I was so surprised by the water and the meat. Neither tasted like the coconut i knew, the kind from the store. The water was basically bland and the soft mushy meat had no flavor.

The smoothie was great: a healthy dessert choice.

Hold that Ladder!

According to Consumer Product Safety Commission accident estimates, tens of thousands of stepladder accidents requiring emergency room treatment occurred annually in the United States. Approximately 85-90% of these accidents involve the user falling from the ladder and 8-9% of these injuries are serious enough to require that the victim be admitted to a hospital. In addition to posing a severe health concern, these accidents have significant loss-of-wages and high medical expense implications.

This Saturday, my uncle was one of those statistics. He was changing light bulbs in his house, with the assistance of his son who was holding the ladder. After they were finished, he decided to take a nap, only to walk into his bathroom and realize that he forgot to change one more bulb. So he decided to just do it himself, not calling his son in to hold the ladder. Big mistake...one that so many people make. We all think that falling off of a ladder is something that won't happen to us. Well, you probably know what happened....he fell off and fell into the bathtub. He was rushed by ambulance to our local trauma hospital since it was a head injury. At first sight, he was bad, confused, bleeding, .moaning in pain, disoriented....and so on. The good news is he was very very lucky. There were no injuries to the spine or brain, however, he had multiply facial fractures, including his eye socket and jaw. Luckily, he only spent one night in the hospital, and now has some healing to do.

This has taught all of our family a big lesson, especially Eddie, my husband. He is the worse about doing everything himself....including climbing high on ladders and doing jobs without any assistance. This scared him. Good, I'm glad. He has now vowed to hire a handyman!

Challah Baking Class

You have to understand, she doesn't cook, doesn't know how. Growing up, we were fortunate enough to have my grandmother cook everything for us. Obviously, i get my love for cooking and baking from my grandma lil.

Last night, I taught a challah baking class for a group meeting between my Hadassah group and my Chabad House's Women's Circle. Never have we had a turn out like last night...there were over 40 women. Everyone made a tiny, bite-sized challah to take home. I demonstrated how to make, braid, and cook the challah. Afterwards, we ate every crumb.

Eric and Heather are continuing on the final leg of their one year journey tomorrow.

Rachel's Bat Mitzvah

This weekend was my neice's bat mitzvah. This is a milestone event in a jewish child's life, when they turn 13 years of age. Once they have become a Bar (for boys) or Bat (for girls) Mitzvah, they are required by jewish law to follow all of the commandments given to the Jewish people by G-d. Rachel was so prepared for her Bat Mitzvah, she has such a beautiful voice that it enhanced the melodies of the prayers. Almost everyone in the family was here...my brother, Howard and his son came in from Atlanta. Unfortunately, Josh was not able to leave school to come in for it. What a nice weekend we had.

Year of Wonders is the story of the sacrifice of a small mountain town in England where the deadly Plague hits. In order to save the lives of others, the town decides to keep everyone in and all others out in order to prevent the spreading of the Plague, knowing full well that such close proximity to each other could very well mean their deaths. It is a depressing story, but also an inspiring one.

I just finished reading this book in two days. Of course, I had nothing else to do then to lie in my bed, with chills and fever, coughing, and a splitting headache. Ironic...reading a book about the plague while i'm sick. This book is a work of fiction inspired by the true story of the villagers of Eyam, Derbyshire, story of the bubonic plague. A bit hard to read....old english text. I love historical fiction!

Finally, Finally, Finally, Eric and Heather have made it back to the USA. Currently they are in Boston, enjoying the fall follage. They are actually there for a wedding and her parents met them there. They will arrive in houston on Wednesday, but this isn't the end to their one year backpacking trip. One more stop: Costa Rica. We are meeting them in Costa Rica in December, can't wait to explore the rain forest....eric and heather style!

Beware of the birds

This is one of the windows in the back of my house. Do you see the white splotches? They are smudges from birds. Ever since the hurricane came, birds have been flying into my windows. Some knock themselves out, some die, some bounce off and fly away. It's not a pretty sight sometimes. We can't figure out what it going on. I have solar shades on some of my windows and nothing on the others. It makes no difference, they come crashing at all hours. Strange.

Time out in Tucson

We decided to take a break from the heat and the hurricane....so we flew to Tucson for the weekend. Actually, we really had it planned before the hurricane even came. The weekend went by too quickly, it was filled with eating and eating and more eating. That's really all we did, and of course, we visited.

On friday, we went to chabad of Arizona for services and dinner. There were over 100 kids there, wow, what a change from the last time we attended.

Saturday, Alex's parents came up from Phoenix, and we ate (of course) some homemade tamales and enchilladas. They were so good.

After a brief shopping trip, we then went to eat Greek food. As you can see, we had a very international eating spree.

It didn't end there, on Sunday morning, we had breakfast at "The Good Egg".

Another wonderful meal!

And last, but not least, on the way to the airport, we stopped at

Brueggers Bagels for dinner for the plane.

Power for our house is finally on, wow, a nice warm shower, working washing machine and dryer, a stove, a computer, and of course the air conditioning. Funny, the weather here is so nice, maybe 70 degrees and no humidity. It's a good thing b/c so many people are without power, still.

FEMA trucks are here, and lots of people are taking advantage of that. Everyone thinks they have something "owed" to them, it's rather sickening how people are behaving. I don't consider a few days w/o power a need for FEMA to pay for my well being. Even if i did stay at a hotel, rather then a friend's house or my own, i would never take that FEMA money. That money is really for those who don't have a choice. Yes, it's for the people who have a tree in the middle of their house, it's the senior who cannot be alone, it's those who have medical problems...it's for those who will not have power or really cannot live in their house for some time. It's not for the middle to upper class who lost some frozen tv dinners. Suddenly, everyone is claiming to have a freezer full of meat.....ummmmmm. I hate dishonesty! There are those who find a way to cheat at everything. Don't' people have morals and values! I hate those who go around the rules or laws. I hate when people lie. Why is it, in this world of so much good, that people cannot be honest, caring, and giving.

So stop your whining and complaining, we are all inconvenienced. We all have some issue with the hurricane. Pick up your head, and move forward and see what you can do to help the next person.

Still no power

The hurricane came and went and we still don't have power. Slowly, little by little, everyone is getting power back. All of our family has power at this point, it's only our neighborhood and eddie's office. Our yardman came and cleaned up the huge mess in our backyard. We lost lots of major branches and a few trees. It doesn't look like we will have any pecans this year, they all blew off!

On another note, I'm still not back at school since they too, don't have power. I've been babysitting our class caterpillar, very nervously b/c it ate all the leaves off the milkweed plant. Luckily, philip and dana had a plant, which i took. I just can't believe how rapidly it grows. It started off the size of a child's eyelash and now, after a week, it's about 1 1/2 inches long.

The final news is that Miss Sophie is going to have a baby brother. We are tickled blue!

Preparing for the Hurricane

Prepare Children for Hurricanes or Storms

People talk about how to prepare your home for a hurricane, but no one talks much about how to prepare our children. I am writing this special thought because some of you may be in the path of this latest hurricane. Some of you may have friends or family in the path so feel free to pass this on to them.

Check your own attitude. Children “catch” their attitudes from you. If they see you frightened and worried, it will make them more frightened and worried. Be brave and be strong as you prepare for the storm.

Limit media. While it is important to keep updated to know what to expect and what to do, limit the time children view and listen to media. Media often paints a dismal frightening picture and when children see this, it scares them more.

Talk honestly. Tell children that there may be a big storm. Tell them the precautions you are taking so you will all be safe.

Involve children. Make a list of everything you have to do to prepare and offer some of the jobs in preparedness to children.

Find times to laugh and sing. I know that this may sound ridiculous with a huge storm coming, but it truly is the best medicine, so find ways to laugh and smile and sing. Listen. Your children may want to talk.

Listen to their fears. Reassure them. Be there for them.Be full of hope. No matter what the weather is on the outside, it is important for children to feel hope on the inside. Things will get better. You are a family. You will be together, and together you can do anything.

Take time to pray together. I have seen children get so much calmer when they pray and know there is a Higher Power at work in their lives, and to ask that Higher Power to take care of them and keep them safe. I know it calms me too when I pray to God.

hurricane ike

So, is it coming or not? Looks like Hurricane Ike is coming right for the gulf coast. Either way, we will have lots of rain. Everytime we check, it's coming more and more north...right towards us. We'll see....and we'll keep you posted. Better stock up on peanut butter and crackers.

This past summer, I donated my time to teach a challah making class for 4 people. The class was on an auction at a fundraiser. The lady that purchased it brought 3 of her friends, and we made several different kinds of challah. Here's a photo that the lady sent to me, of the challah she made at home, for the upcoming jewish holidays. You'd never know she just learned. I told her next year she can teach the class!

I failed to mention that on Friday, I dropped my camera. It wouldn't take flash pictures after that. Then Friday night, I dropped it again. That did it in. Finally, yesterday I took it to school, hoping I could take a photo outside. No such luck, especially since I dropped it a 3rd time. Not my week for cameras. Funny, I've never dropped it before.

Today is tuesday, but since yesterday was a school holiday, it felt like monday...all day. I was just a bit off.

Sometimes I feel like I am wearing too many hats...let's see. I teach, I clown, I take religious classes, I volunteer at 2 synogogues, I am in charge of way too many things, I have a big shabbos dinner every friday night, I am making prayer shawls to give away, I volunteer teach challah baking, I mosaic tile, I am trying to finish a quilt, I don't know how to say "NO", I am the best gramma in the whole world, and finally I have been neglecting my poor doggie. He's become fat and lazy. Poor buddy, all he wants is a walk. Maybe tomorrow.

We just got home from a 10 trip to Seattle and an Alaskan Cruise. Never have I seen such beautiful landscape. We have been on alot of cruises, but this was the best one ever! So many people told us not to take it b/c it was for seniors....well, they were wrong. This was a perfect cruise for families....I just wish we had our whole family with us. Next time....

My best friend

Four years ago, one of my best friends moved away. We had only been friends for a few years, however, we were tight, like Thelma and Louise. She got divorced, and wanted to move away and start a whole new life. I was very sad, and I felt a bit rejected. However, I knew it was the best thing for both her and her X. So she left, and I gave her the space of starting over. We never spoke again. We got the X in the divorce.

So how does one do it when you have 2 couples who are best of friends. The females are best friends and the males are best friends. No easy answer. She was very brave to move away, and I can happily say, she has blossomed. My friend is a happy newleywed. I'm so proud of her.

This past Sept or Oct. I contacted her and we've been in touch ever since. Finally the day came where we would meet...she was in Houston for a few days, helping a friend move into an apt for cancer treatment at md anderson. We spoke about a 100 times by phone, and only had a few hours over dinner to visit.

And once again, Thelma and Louse are back...

Lost and Found

Almost every morning, I take Buddy on a walk. However, since this is my summer vacation, sometimes I tend to sleep too late. That means it's too hot to walk outside. Most days we do get the exercise, though.

So what do you do on your walk. We all know what the dog does....he jumps up and down off the curb, he walks on the curb, he pees on everything, he sniffs everything, and runs through the puddles.

I don't listen to music, this is really my time to just think and relax. My eyes are always alert, though, because I am the lost and found treasure master. Everyday, I find interesting things.

Today I found a tennis ball for Buddy, a penny for charity, lots of nuts and bolts, and one nail which I will prevent someone from having a flat tire.

Yesterday was a better find, a great floppy camoflauge hat, that had been run over about a million times. I picked it from the middle of the street, washed it, and it's good as new. Last week my finds were 10 beautiful glass stones, which i will use in my kindergarten class when we read "Stone Soup."

In the past, I have found several loaded wallets, a purse, a bank bag filled with money and checks, a 3 carat diamond ring, a diamond chipped tennis bracelet, cash of all sorts, golf balls, and all kinds of other miscellaneous things. Almost all of the items made it back to the owners, with the exception of the bracelet and loose change.

Marboro cigarettes use to have this program where they have a little points coupon on their box. The points are collected and you can trade them in for merchandise. No one in my family smokes, nor did any of my friends. When my kids were little, we would pick up the boxes from the street, tear off the coupon, and we ended up with all kinds of "Marboro stuff". We were able to freely purchase luggage, t-shirts, etc . Imagine, all this from people's trash, which they throw on the ground. During the course of my walk around the neighborhood, I'd get at least 5 coupons.

So we not only collected the coupons, we were cleaning up the streeet, as well.
