happy anniverary

Do you have any idea of how many ways there are to say "I love you"? Well, first I want to send kisses and hugs to my wonderful husband, eddie. Today is our 31 st wedding anniversary! For those of you who don't know about our meeting: I was going to school in austin, he was in houston. I came in for the jewish holiday: rosh hashana. To make a long story short, he walked over to me during services, (i think he really wanted to meet my roomate), flirted, and won me over. Three months later we were engaged. Without sounding "corny", I knew the minute I saw him that he would be the one I was going to marry. When you know, you know. I was one of the lucky ones...to find my "besheret. " He is truly my soul mate. I love you, eddie.............................

We also share our anniverary with several friends. Ginnie and Bruce F. Sharon and Allen M., Robyn and Adam B., and Jennifer and Gabe L. Good company.......................................................

Africa

My blogger friend, Kelli, is in Africa. Wouldn't you know it, her luggage didn't make it yet. All those goodie bags that we made will hopefully catch up with her. In the meantime, she had seen some terribly sad sights: AIDS villages, where people are without medicine, waiting to die. Children are malnourished, not being cared for by the sick parents. Mothers cannot breatfeed because of the AIDS. So very sad. What can we do to help? Read more of her experience at: www.africankelli.com..............................................................................................................................

On a different note, watch this amazing video on you tube. It's all about sticking together and saving a life. There is power in numbers.............................................................................................

Let's go grocery shopping

Can you believe these flowers are from my garden at the new house. Too bad I can't enjoy the inside as much as i do the outside. Only a few more months........................................................
Ok, so if you look at the bottom of my blog, there is a comment section. I know someone is looking at my blog, the numbers are growing. Please let me know if you're visiting and what you think....bloggers love comments.......................................................................................................
As usual, it rained today. Yes, I washed my car first. Actually, the lexus body shop washed it after they repaired my car. Then I stopped at Whole Foods and had an ego booster: I love when men try to pick me up! So what, he was only 63, but he looked much younger. Funny, the last time this happened, I was at Fiesta Supermarket. Grocery stores must be the pick-up place. Men don't care, I even had my wedding ring on. Whatever, I'm not interested, but love the compliments. Tomorrow I think I might need some eggs...

Raw is Rough

As many of you know, I have been experiencing raw recipes. The one thing that I procrastated with was the green smoothie. The color just didn't do it for me. So finally yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and try it. I was so surprised at how wonderful and filling it was. Here's the recipe:
Peachy-Spinach Smoothie (from www.rawfoodrightnow.com)

2 bananas
3-4 peaches
2 handfuls of fresh spinach (there was a bit of shredded carrots in the bag, which was great added crunch)
dash of salt
orange juice (about 1/2 cup-depending how thick you want it)

Just blend. I added ice cubes, it definately needed to be cold.

The other picture is another dessert recipe i tried. Again, fantastic...I served it Friday night for Shabbat and everyone liked it. Here's that recipe from Ani's Raw Food Kitchen. I changed the recipe a bit b/c i didn't have a vanilla bean and i used regular salt. You can view the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuGjDagUWNg

Ani's Donut Holes

1 cup almonds (soaked overnight and then air dried)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup dried pineapple
1 cup pitted dates (remove pits and make sure there are no worms or eggs inside the dates!)
3 Tablespoons dried shredded coconut

2 Tablesppons dried shredded coconut to roll balls in

Soak almonds overnight to bring out the flavor. Then let them completely dry. You don't have to soak, the nuts will then be crunchier. Process the nuts till chopped. Separeately, process the pineapple till chopped. Then add in the rest of the ingredients and blend (but do not puree). Roll into balls. Then roll into coconut.

The problem with all of this raw food is that it can be rough on the tummy. I may have overdone it yesterday...first the smoothie, then a big salad with spinach/romaine/jicama/and mock salmon salad. (another great recipe). By 3:00 I had such a headache that I couldn't wait to go home and eat all the crap my body wanted. So all afternoon I kept eating to make the headache go away. Wouldn't you know it, the only thing that helped was a diet coke and advil. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I guess i shouldn't have eaten the 4 oreos, either!!! Maybe today I'll be better, now that the oreos are out of the house. So this is what i've learned: moderation is best. Try and eat more veggies, slowly. Don't try and go raw all at once. The body can't handle it.
Bon Apetite.

Cherished moments

It's not often that I get all of my boys home at the same time. With Josh off at the University of Arizona, Eric in Wimberly at Camp Young Judaea, Heather working at the Arboretum, Ileya traveling to some exotic country catching "intestinal worms", Adam off on fishing expositions, Dana and Philp in Scottsdale (or shopping at Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel), Eddie cutting down trees at the new house....the list goes on. I'm greatful that every once in a while all of us are in town, and can spend a meal together. Of course, it's also nice to have it out at the local tex mex with marguaritas! So where's Ileya in this picture...she was spending the evening with one of her best friends, smo. And who's the new girl in white? That's Alex, Josh's gorgeous girlfriend, who also goes to U of A. Josh and Alex came home for the weekend, now that finals are over. Yes, he once again made a 4.0.

shabbat shalom

Just do it
I always love fridays, not because I spend all afternoon in the kitchen preparing for shabbos. I love it because all of my kids come for dinner. Tonight will be extra special because my parents and eddie's mom is also coming. There is something about shabbat that brings the family unit together, recharging us all for the week to come. When I was growing up, every shabbat was spent at my grandparent's house. That's just what we did each week. My grandmother continued having shabbat until she had her stroke and went into a retirement home. Those weekly gatherings were not just a dinner...they were teaching us the value of family, friendships, and our judaism. I am proud to be carrying on this tradition, in memory of my grandma lil. I am also so very proud that my children want to come and when it is not possible for me to have dinner or i am out of town, they continue the tradition of shabbat on their own, all together.
Just do it....
Shabbat Shalom

white trash

Do you have any idea of how much paper trash you accumulate over a week!!!! This week (starting sunday) I decided to add paper to my recycling, due to the continued nudging from eric and heather. For 5 days now, I've been putting anything paper into this garbage bag. Amazing how the junk mail, cardboard boxes, gift wrap, bags, newspaper, etc add up each day to fill this large garbage bag. I don't even have to take it to the recyling center, they come to me every friday and empty the "blue recycle bins." So I challenge you all to do the same, and make our landfills just a little emptier and our world a bit greener for the generations to come....

If your garden needed watering today, you can thank me. Every single time I get my car washed, it rains. I don't pay to have it washed very often, usually I do it myself. Not today, I paid. Go figure.

mitzvot

Over the last couple of weeks, my Kindergarten Class took on a very special Mitzvah Project. I have a blogger friend, Kelli, who will be traveling to Mozambique, Africa to work in an orphanage. My kindergarten students put together “goodie bags” for Kelli to distribute to the orphans in that orphanage. Through doing this project, the students learned about geography, language, computer, hygiene, compassion, and mitzvot. Each student made a personal card with a message in English, as well as in Portuguese, which was translated on the computer. Each card was put into a “goodie bag” which was filled with stickers, band aids, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, pencils, hair items, and many other toiletries. The students collected so many items that they were able to make 40 one quart size “goodie bags.” As a result of this project, the students learned the value of giving and bringing a smile to a child’s face. Thank you to all those who contributed to their project.

So here's the drama for yesterday: buddy was in the backyard and all of a sudden, he started barking and running around the deck. He kept sniffing around the deck, so i knew it was probably a squirrel or some little rodent that went under the deck. There's always some kind of critter in the backyard. Well, Buddy never came inside. I walked out to look for him, and he is sitting very still in the flower bed, with something in his mouth. I got him out of the flowerbed, and couldn't identify the critter in his mouth, I only saw white fur. Finally after a few minutes, he dropped it. There was fur all over his mouth, and he quickly ate the fur. I locked him in the house, and went to examine the little alien. It was a hairless, a newborn, and when i saw the pointy ears, i saw that it was a baby bunny. I went back to the flowerbed and found a furry little nest with another bunny inside. So now what am I going to do with buddy and this bunny. Buddy couldn't be left to go outside alone through the doggie door....he'd eat the other bunny. Heather told me not to bring it inside, but i deliberated the issue of trying to raise it. The internet had lots of detailed instructions, but really, too much work for me to do. It rained hard and i figured the bunny drowned. In the morning when i checked on the bunny, the nest was empty. Either the mother bunny moved it, or some other critter had a nice bunny for breakfast. Buddy won in the end, he got his backyard back.
